An Israeli Biomedical Scientist, Kafira and a North Korean Biomedical scientist, Min-shu are pitted against one another. Kafira is the Western world's leading scientist dealing with haemorrhagic diseases, in particular, the incurable Ebola virus. Min-shu is under pressure to develop an Ebola-like virus to force the United Nations into handing over the mineral rich Moon, to North Korea. Kafira doesn't believe that Kim Il-sung will kill his own people and advises the UN that it must be a variant and that Kim Il-sung has the cure.
Kafira is supported by Charles Edmonds, an ex-Commando in the British Army, now an Astronomer, who works covertly for the CIA. Sir James Halliday acting as the President of the UN Security Council learns of the North Korean plot and seeks to persuade the members of the Council to reject the claim. Dogged political resistance by China to the rejection threatens the world. The only hope of survival is that Kafira can identify the variant, and how to defeat it before it consumes the world.

The Supreme Leader Kim iI Jong claims the moon as an annex of North Korea. To back his claim, the Supreme Leader assigns the nation's leading biomedical researcher Shin Min Shu to develop a deadlier strain of Ebola.
Former Royal Marine Commando Charles Edmonds is the Special Assistant to the Director of NASA. He leads an investigation into a claim by the thirteen year old son of a Connecticut astronomer that he saw a two second flash on the moon. Taking it seriously and finding other supporting evidence, NASA has Edmonds puts together a Luna landing team that includes thirtyish Israeli widow Kafira "Kaffie" Weiss whose beloved husband Ira was killed in conflict with the Palestinians. Recognized as the world's number one expert on Ebola, what Kaffie and others learn on the moon leads her and her CDC Special Pathogens Unit desperately seeking a way to prevent the North Korean enhanced Ebola strain from going pandemic.
This is an exciting thriller that deftly ties a moon landing with biological warfare. The key members of the international cast appear fully developed as for instance Shin Min Shu feels euphoric over her research but remorse over what the world might do to the children of her country and if her leader deploys her pathogen killing the young of other nations. The storyline is extremely fast-paced (too transitionally fast at times) as Kaffie knows time has run out.

Kafira John G O'Neill 9780994268433 Books Reviews
I honestly did not know what to expect when I picked up this book. This is international intrigue at its best written in a manner that holds your attention. There are so many inter twining plots set out as separate chapters then culminating in how they all are really one story with an ending that will surprise and sadden you. I am finding it hard to really write my feelings down about this book. At times it frightened me, at other times it made me smile and rejoice. All in all I am very glad I read it-even if I will never again think of North Korea, The FDA, or the UN in quite the same light again.
Kafira is a story of one mad dictator's quest to own the moon, his extortion attempts to achieve this, and the terrible revenge he would enact if denied. The international intrigue is quite plausible, despite the far-fetched scenario. O'Neill's strength is in plot and character. He is not sentimental and his stories take unexpected turns. Hold on!
When the world is faced by a catastrophic virus the enigmatic Kafira lives up to her name to stave off danger.
Kafira is a world leading expert on the Ebola virus for which there is no known cure, when the North Koreans threaten to contaminate the world with such a virus unless their claim to the moon is honoured it becomes a race against time to save lives.
A gripping fast paced thriller, but unfortunately peppered with grammatical errors. The version I read could have done with a good proof-read.
I was given this book in return for an honest review. This book starts out on the Moon with Kaffie(Kafira) in her suit outside on the surface of the Moon, when something goes terribly wrong and she almost dies. The Korean Supreme leader has issued a threat to the world, he has gone to the moon and if he is not obeyed in his demands, he plans to release the most deadly virus ever seen onto the earth, killing everyone. Kaffie is a Biomedical Scientist sent with a group of experts to the moon to investigate what is happening, while also finding a cure for the disease in case it is released. Shin Min Shu is part of the Korean team, he is charged with developing the deadly disease. He doesn't want to, he isn't a killer but isn't given a choice. This book is action packed and suspenseful, not only do they have to worry about the Koreans, but there may be a saboteur on their own team. Charles, the ex Commando for the Royal Marines may be my fave character, I'm a sucker for a tough guy. I can't help it. I wasn't sure how I was going to like this book in the beginning, but I actually really enjoyed it. It's well written with great characters. It's kind of a mishmash of suspense, mystery, political, sci-fi, medical, etc. It's got a bit of everything for you to enjoy.
